Bones! We all have them, and so do other vertebrates, but it’s confusing for children to imagine what they look like inside their own bodies. Fortunately, the right Montessori lessons can help us teach this fascinating information. Once you start using words like “phalanges” and “patella” in daily conversation with your child, it’s hard to stop! Plus, studying bones gives you the opportunity to learn about X-rays and cultural celebrations that honor ancestors, like Dia de los Muertos. Get ready to have some fun!

The lessons in this theme are “humerus” (bone pun intended!) and easy activities to do at home with simple, crafty materials you likely have around the house. Plus, you’ll be relieved to find the done-for-you printable materials inside the packet: just print, cut and start teaching!

CUSTOMER VOICES

“The vertebrates and invertebrates activity was a favorite! We had a quiet, slow morning today, and I brought it out again since she liked it so much the first time. She really enjoyed having the answer key on the back of each picture – it felt like she was teaching herself as she would turn each one over and put it where it went.” – Maureen

“We all enjoyed making the cempasuchil yesterday! I wanted to use orange tissue paper but decided to just use what we had on hand. We put them in a vase to brighten up our Montessori activity room!” – Sarah

“They especially loved “phalanges” 🤣 and got veryyyy silly using the names of bones in funny sentences (like oh I’ll get you with my phalanges!!!!! And then chasing ensues!) I’ll take the win over here. 🙌🏼” – Dannielle

“Mom! My pancake looks like a skull.” – Beth

My favorite part of the Constellation themes is that the month is creatively divided into inspirational sub-themes that inspire me to explore different aspects of the theme. As an overwhelmed parent, Constellation provides my creativity with a gigantic jump start. We don’t always follow the course plan because I find myself inspired to do activities I might NOT have thought of on my own. The month is over too soon!

My son and I made some really beautiful memories during this theme. This curriculum has been very grounding for us, in general. It has taken a lot off my plate and I am truly enjoying learning along with him. Doing this theme in preparation for Halloween and Dia de los muertos was so fun. He still mentions his clavicle or phalanges. It was amazing to see him connect the dots between the skeleton in front of him (in pictures and in the model we purchased) and the skeleton inside of him.

  3. Sarah

This was one of our favorite themes! It was so fun to learn the names of the major bones in our bodies in very visual, hands-on ways through parts cards, an actual skeleton, games like Skelly Says, and playfully incorporating the names of bones into our lexicon. Just like in every theme, we also had fun learning a new song, exploring art, and reading a poem all related to bones. I appreciated the cultural activities related to the Day of the Dead/Dia de Los Muertes celebration too! We did every single activity and loved them! 💕

I LOVED this theme!! I, as an adult, learned SO MUCH!! My 3yo is still wanting to do the vertebrates and invertebrates activity months later. Very worthwhile.

  5. Fjola

Essential learning for any child, with a wide range of ways to make each activity available to any child from toddler to elementary. I love how there is always a twist to the theme too that takes you in a not so literal direction but really gets to the heart of a topic. In this case, bringing in the concept of death and honoring those passed away too. A well rounded and inspiring theme!

This unit has really inspired my children. When they play doctor, I hear them talking bone talk such as x-rays and mending broken bones.
