Bzzzz! The little bees in your garden are on a mission: to find the sweetest nectar from the world’s abundance of flowers. Back to the hive they go for the most delicious alchemy, producing golden, sticky honey. Your little one will be entranced learning about the life cycle of a bee and where the sugars we ingest through fruits or baked goods even come from. Even if you’re not a family who eats a lot of sugar, there is much to love about this theme. Sugar is a sweet, soluble carbohydrate that occurs naturally on the earth, and it’s fascinating to learn about scientifically.

The lessons in this theme are suh-weet! You need easy activities you can do at home with simple, crafty materials you likely have around the house. Plus, you’ll be relieved to find the done-for-you printable materials inside the packet: just print, cut and start teaching!

CUSTOMER VOICES

“Yesterday, my 3 year old found this random baby toy, put the little stones in and proudly showed me how it was filled with eggs like the little cells in a beehive.” – Maureen

“We did the sugar experiment using beverages and adjusted the measurements to per 100mL for a more accurate comparison. It was a great conversation about fractions 1/2 and 1/4.” – Fjola

“My girls loved acting out the life cycle of the bee. We used some silk for cocoons and acted out the life cycle with our cells we made from cardboard.” – Caitlyn

We really enjoyed the activities in this, from making beet pancakes to learning about the life cycle of bees (with some great book recommendations that drove the learning), to making rock candy. Doing tasting of different flavors – salty, sweet, bitter etc. paired well with reading a book we had about tastes and was an inspiration to come up with our own ideas to expand on it (like putting different foods like lemon peel and lemon juice and sugar in a muffin tin to talk about what flavors they were), this tasting activity and the follow up it inspired really led to the girls talking much more about what flavors they tasted in our food. I think the most impactful activity we did was “graceful gifting,” which is very simple on its surface but has been a wonderful way to give a lesson about how to give and accept gifts and thank someone without the lesson feeling like a lecture – and a year later, the girls are still constantly wrapping up of little items in bags/boxes/scarves and gifting them to each other or to us. I’m looking forward to circling back to this theme and doing a couple more activities we never got to.

My son has a sweet tooth, so he liked this one too! We had fun chewing gum and weighing it before and after to see how much sugar escaped into our bellies!

It’s been a year since we first introduced these activities and my children are still asking to act out the life cycle of the bee!
